OBITUARY

Mr. A. Matheson

A wide circle of friends learned with regret of the recent death of Mr. Alex (Sandy) Matheson, which occurred at the Mt. Morgan Hospital. Mr. Matheson, who was 82 years of age, had been in in-different health for some time.

He was born at Rockhampton. Leaving school at the age of 10 years he became spare boy for his father on bullock teams in the Windorah and Stonehenge districts. He first came to Mt. Morgan in 1889 where he became engaged in timber hauling for old Mt. Morgan Gold Mining Co. with horse and bullock teams. In those days teams were numerous and the only means of transport to the company’s mine from Fletcher’s Creek, Slab Hut and the Nine Mile. He later secured employment with the company and worked on the mountain top and was employed as a miner for a considerable time. When the Callide Valley line was being constructed he left the company to work on the new line where he remained, being one of the last men to see the line completed at Thangool. He ceased active employment in 1930, and was on part-time employment on a cattle station in the Dawson Valley.

The late Mr. Matheson married Mary Clements, at Mt. Morgan on July 23, 1895. He is survived by his widow, seven daughters, Mesdames W. McLeod, G. Moulds, R. Jamieson, C. Ramsay, D. Jensen (M. Morgan), Mrs. A. Ceisiolka (Ravenshoe), Mrs. A. Jahnke (Calen) and three sons, Messrs. Alick (Banana station), Bill (Moura), George (Mt. Larcom) and one brother, William (Rockhampton). Two sons predeceased him.
