Giret Ogiers 1510-1580 was born in St Michel Guernsey. He married Marie Sauvery about 1548.
According to land records, Giret must have had a prosperous business as a butcher as he acquired considerable land holdings throughout his life, most of which passed to his eldest son, Pierre. Most of his land appears to have been in the Vingtaine de l’Epine.
Giret was also a “vavasseur” at the manorial courts of Fiefs le Comte and St. Michel. He was “collecteur” at the Vale Church and at its chapel of ease, the Chapelle de L’Epine. On 2nd August 1553 witnesses gave testimony that Giret was involved in an argument in July 1553 where he asserted that Henry VIII had declared the Queen, Mary, to be illegitimate shortly before he died. Lady Jane Grey, a Protestant, was contesting Mary’s right to the throne. Although Giret had been a Catholic earlier in his life, at this time he had become Protestant. He was convicted of making disparaging remarks about the then Queen, Mary, and imprisoned at Castle Cornet for a few months before receiving a royal pardon.
Michel Ogiers 1465-1524 was born in Normandy. He was living at St Michel du Valle Guernsey in 1511 with his wife Marion and baby son Giret. He went to Guernsey as early as 1495 when he was mentioned in a record of the Feif le Comte Guernsey 20 March 1494/5 alongside other aged and longstanding tenants of the Feif le Comte where he bought property. On 19 Jan 1529 he gave evidence regarding its ownership, stating he was 65 years old, not born in Guernsey and described as ‘des parties de Normandie’ residing in the Vale parish.
Pierre Ogiers 1440-1471 was born in Eure Haute Normandie. Found in ‘Le Historie de la vile de Soissons’ section titled ‘Documents Concerning city of Rouen under English Domination’, Pierre Ogiers owned land near the square tower of the Castle of Rouen in 1419.
